Aluminum Scandium Master Alloy can be made to AlSc2%, AlSc5%, AlSc10%, AlSc20% and up to 30%Sc content. However, AlSc2% is most needed by market.

AlSc master alloy is utilized for rapid and accurate alloying into a variety of casting type and wrought type aluminum alloy melts. The addition of scandium provides the following benefits in those alloys:

Supporting the alloy grain refinement during casting and solidification

Improving weldabilty of aluminum alloys while minimizing hot cracking of welds

Increasing yield and ultimate tensile strength in 2xxx, 5xxx and 7xxx alloy series

Increasing recrystallization of heat-treatable aluminum alloys during hot working

Processing Method:

Doping high purity scandium metal/scandium oxide to high purity aluminium, melting and mixing in intermediate frequency furnace, deslagging.

Application:

Aluminum-Scandium Master Alloy can significantly enhance the alloys' properties in the strength, hardness, weldability, ductibility, superplasticity, corrosion resistance as well as inhibiting recrystallization.

These characteristics make AlSc alloys can be applied in the aerospace, aviation, naval ship, as well as light-duty vehicles or sports equipment and high-speed trains.

FAQs:

How strong is scandium alloy?

Scandium delivers transformative strength without the need for problematic and costly heat treatments. Specifically, scandium additions can increase yield strength on a 5000 Series to between 300Mpa and 450Mpa, depending on the amount of addition, while maintaining elongation (ductility) figures of 12-15.

Is scandium lighter than aluminum?

Scandium alloy used for bicycle is actually aluminum alloy with very small amount of scandium. Better strength and requiring lesser composites to attain same amount of strength. Scandium are generally lighter than aluminum. They are also more susceptible to paint peeling due to the scandium properties.

Can scandium rust?

It does improve the engineering properties of the alloy, but there's very little actual scandium involved. The alloy can't rust, because there's no iron. Like other aluminum alloys, any surface oxidation that forums acts as a protective layer and prevents further degradation, so it's virtually maintenance free.

What’s the benefit of aluminium scandium alloy?

Adding a certain amount of scandium to the aluminum alloy can greatly improve the strength, hardness, weldability and corrosion resistance of the aluminum alloy. We can say that the aluminum scandium alloy is an upgraded version of the aluminum alloy.

When combined with aluminium and various other aluminium alloys scandium has several key and profound benefits:

Enhanced strength

Resistance to corrosion

Heat tolerance

Makes the alloy weldable

While titanium is currently the most common way to enhance the strength of aluminium, it comes with the major problem of brittleness, limiting its uses in the aviation industry. By contrast, scandium additions allow the alloy to remain flexible and lightweight, with Fergus emphasising that it has "up to 40% less mass than a titanium alloy".

How’s the future of AlSc alloy in areospace?

AlSc alloys are superior to other aerospace alloys such as aluminum magnesium and aluminum lithium alloys in terms of low density and high strength properties. Currently AlSc alloys have already been used in various rotating and moving gears as well as fuels and exhaust system. Aluminum scandium alloy products have great potential in the aerospace industry.

Can AlSc alloy be used in automotive industry?

Yes, scandium alloys may also prove incredibly useful to the automotive industry, particular with the rise of electric vehicles. Due to the lightweight and strength of aluminium alloys, they are the perfect material for body panelling. The addition of scandium will allow panelling to be even thinner, drastically reducing weight, to produce efficient and more environmentally friendly vehicles.
